The Optomap retinal exam is an excellent way to view a great deal of the retina (the back of the eye) without the use of dilating eye drops.  It uses two scanning lasers to generate a very detailed image of the retina that is then shown on the computer monitors in the exam room.  The optomap is a spectacular tool for detecting eye disease such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and cancer of the eye.  It can also be used to find signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and impending stroke.  Since your optomap will be stored permanently on a computer disk, it also serves as a great baseline to be used in future exams.
